Break the Silence: A Showcase of Women’s Narratives in Books, Films, and Music is jointly organized by the WKU Library and the student club Link-Sis. This themed event is open to the entire university community and takes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women as its starting point. It aims to promote the values of gender equality and affirm a collective stance against gender-based violence. The initiative seeks to raise awareness and understanding of these issues on campus, while encouraging participants to voice their concerns and express their demands in a rational and lawful manner.

01. ORIGINS

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women originated from the tragic assassination of the Mirabal sisters, political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered on November 25, 1960, for opposing the dictatorship. To commemorate their courage and raise global awareness about gender-based violence, the United Nations officially designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in 1999. Since then, the day has become a rallying point for governments, organizations, and individuals around the world to advocate for women’s rights, promote gender equality, and call for an end to all forms of violence against women and girls. It serves as a reminder that protecting women’s safety and dignity is not only a matter of justice but also a foundation for social harmony and sustainable development.

WORDS

This section’s books invite you into the world of women—their stories, their reflections, and their realities. Each page of text resonates with power, stirring echoes in your heart, allowing you to feel strength while encountering tenderness and resilience. Here, words carry both warmth and might—each one proclaims: Words Matter.

Each interaction leaves the imprint of your voice and creates a moment of resonance with others, allowing action and reflection to grow through participation.
