Immersive Reading Activity | Five Senses Laboratory

March 05, 2026 | Upcoming Events | WKU Library

tupian1

The afternoon sun in the library, the song playing in your headphones late at night, the fresh scent of grass after a rain on the sports field—these small, sensory moments make up the heart of our daily campus life.

But more often, we're rushing around: walking while checking our phones, eating while binge-watching TV shows, attending classes while replying to messages. Our senses get fragmented, and the world becomes background noise. Those vivid moments that should stand out quietly slip away.

This March, WKU Library invites you to slow down. Open a book, and let the words awaken the feelings you've been missing. Notice how the colors of the city unfold, listen to the stories carried by the wind, breathe in the scent of a street, savor the taste of nostalgia in a dish, and feel the warmth of a page as it reaches your fingertips. When words engage the senses, reading becomes a deeper conversation with the world.

In Invisible Cities, Calvino writes: "A city is like a dream, built from hope and fear." Our campus, too, is quietly shaped by the sunlight, scents, and the sounds of the wind. When words awaken your senses, you might once again catch the fresh smell of the field after rain, hear the soft rustling of leaves in the evening, or see the light and shadows slanting across the library window. On a page of a book, those moments you once overlooked come back to life, meeting the spring breeze and reconnecting with you.

Reading is more than just seeing—it allows us to rediscover, hear, and touch the world as it grows.
