Immersive Reading Activity | A Letter to the Faraway

September 17, 2026 | Upcoming Events | WKU Library

From Lin Juemin's A Letter to My Wife to Wang Xiaobo's "Hello, Li Yinhe," letters have always carried more than words. Between the lines, they hold the warmth of people and places far away.

At the start of a new semester, distance can suddenly take familiar forms: a train ticket, a choppy video call, or a message typed out and deleted before it is ever sent. The things left unsaid, the words we struggle to put into words, are often simply waiting for the right way to be expressed.

With the Mid-Autumn Festival just around the corner, WKU Library invites you to join the first Immersive Reading Activity of the new semester. Take a journey through books, and then put pen to paper to write a letter to someone far away.

Activity Introduction

The Immersive Reading Activity is a specially curated experience by the Wenzhou-Kean University Library. In a tranquil setting, participants immerse themselves in two hours of focused reading accompanied by "one book," and conclude by sharing their insights through "one reflection." Held monthly around a specific theme, the event transforms reading from a solitary activity into an opportunity for community connection.

Activity Schedule

01 Reading Session

13:15-14:45

Participants may choose a book from the recommended reading list or library collection for immersive reading. The selection includes collections of real letters as well as stories told through correspondence. As you read, feel free to jot down any lines that move you. They may inspire the letter you write later.

02 Writing Session

14:45-15:15

Close your book and write a letter. You may adopt the voice of a character from your book, or simply write to someone far away in your own words. The library will provide stationery, envelopes, and stamps. You may choose to have your letter mailed by the library or take it with you and send it yourself.

03 Sharing Session

15:15-15:45

Participants are welcome to take turns sharing a favorite passage from a letter, reading it aloud in their local dialect if they wish, and sharing their thoughts on the letters they have read.

As the film Dear you puts it, "Though rivers and seas may stretch for miles, thinking of you makes the distance feel small." When a letter travels from one person to another, what the recipient reads upon opening it is not the distance between them, but the thought and care carried across it.

If there is someone "far away" in your heart, come to WKU Library. Read the letters others have written, then take up a pen and write one of your own. Write to your family, your friends, or even your future self—anyone you wish to reach

On the afternoon of September 23, join us at the SLAC 607 Academic Seminar for the Immersive Reading Activity. We have prepared the books, stationery, and stamps. All that's missing is you.
