Event Preview | WKU Reading Ascent
Improving English reading skills takes consistent practice and the right strategies. From understanding a text to interpreting its deeper meaning, and from building vocabulary to developing expression, every step contributes to becoming a more confident reader.
WKU Library, in collaboration with College of Liberal Arts, is launching WKU Reading Ascent, a graded reading series designed to help students develop their English reading skills. Drawing on the Library’s graded reading collection and additional reading materials recommended by Dr. James McDougall, the series will feature instructor-led reading sessions, reading strategy sharing, text discussions, and practical exercises. Through these activities, students can find a reading pace that works for them and gradually strengthen their English proficiency.
What Is Graded Reading?
Graded reading involves organizing reading materials into different levels based on readers’ language proficiency and reading ability. The vocabulary, sentence structures, and overall text difficulty are carefully considered to help readers select materials suited to their current level and improve their reading skills step by step.
WKU Library’s Graded Readers offer English reading materials at a range of difficulty levels. Students can start with a level that suits them, build vocabulary, develop text comprehension, and learn to express ideas through reading. Over time, they can gain confidence and establish lasting reading habits.
