The Plan of Going Home | Review of Lecture The Drift and The Sedimentation, and Pickle Workshop

January 16, 2026 | Library News

In early 2026, the Hong Museum is launching a new exhibition titled DIGESTIVE ETHICS, curated by Guo Hetian and Qin Kechun (te editions). The Plan of Going Home, a local food residency project in the prelude to the exhibition, was also supported academically by te editions and co-initiated with the Wenzhou-Kean University Library and the Nastore.

The Plan of Going Home focus on local food culture as the creative object, sorting out the ecological limitations and immigration changes under Wenzhou cuisine, or using a certain food/ingredient from Wenzhou as a starting point to touch on a larger cultural context, and translating it through contemporary art methods.

The Wenzhou-Kean University Library recently organized The Plan of Going Home series activities, which included a lecture on The Drift and The Sedimentation presented by artist Chen Jiacheng, and a "Pickles" workshop led by artist Gao Qizhen and speaker He Oumiao.

In lecture The Drift and The Sedimentation, resident artist Chen Jiacheng quoted ideas and achievements from different past projects, focusing on geological phenomena.

He first introduced the phenomena of drift and sedimentation in paper production, based on this, he guided his retrospective work on wetland landscapes in the Great Floodplain of the United States and the design of black soil agriculture.

In the Unpredictable As Mountain Weather project at the North Hill Contemporary Art Museum, he conducted measurements of spatial wetting phenomena and take the work Steam from the Mountain as an example to illustrate how to integrate the floating mountain steam into the composition as a part of the artwork.

In the ritual design for Youlong Village, Anhui Province, he proposed a hypothetical way to integrate floating bodies into an ecological Qingming memorial ceremony.

Finally, based on different phenomena observed during his residency in Wenzhou, he summarized a set of comparative interpretations of "rhizome-tuber". He emphasized that the tree-like structure and rhizome pattern defined in Thousand Plateaus are not a simple transformation from "structured" to "decentralized". During his investigation, he gradually realized that "Pan Cai" is not just a vegetable with local characteristics, but the "tuber" it represents has a function of "temporary fixation" and can form a new cycle with the "rhizome" and "tree-like structure" in the context of Wenzhou's clan culture.

In the pickle workshop, the artist Gao Qizhen introduced the unique smell and shape of Wenzhou pickles, as well as their preparation methods and principles. She also shared with the audience how to experience various types of pickles through taste, sight, smell, touch, and hearing.

The workshop speaker, He Oumiao, introduced several common pickles found in the Wenzhou market, tasted them with everyone, and shared their personal experiences with "smell". Afterwards, everyone wrote down their own little diaries about pickles on the canvas, using pickles as a creative tool for artistic expression, and then shared their works.
